sorta subtoot but mainly just cuz I didn't wanna dump my thoughts into someone I don't know well's mentions

I've always found "play another ttrpg than d&d" to be not especially helpful advice. like yeah, there are lots of "better" rulesets for different niches than 5e. but 5e is a mostly-fine designed ruleset, it's easy to run and it's versatile. I run 5e sometimes still, largely because people know the rules already!

it's not like anyone gives wotc money for it anyways, we all have the 5e pdfs

sorta subtoot but mainly just cuz I didn't wanna dump my thoughts into someone I don't know well's mentions

if I'm running a 2-shot for people who have only ever played 5e... I'm gonna run it in 5e! and if I found some l group who had only ever played MotW, I'd run MotW -- but I've never seen that before, and I've seen lots of 5e-only groups. I'm happy to do a session 0 for full campaigns, but for something thats only gonna last a week? I'd rather not.

as such, 5e has use basically as a pidgin.

with that being said -- you *should* play other ttrpgs, cuz they're a lot of fun!! Apocalypse World (or Monster Of The Week, same core rules) is cool and fun! Stars Without Number is an amazing sci-fi ruleset with generative star systems! Call of Cthulu is fun if you want to kill everyone!

but like. don't feel *bad* for running 5e out of convenience.

@jacethechicken but 3e is Just Better, and also, exists in completely free srd form? :blobcattilt:

i. don't understand why anyone is even using 5e

re: sorta subtoot but mainly just cuz I didn't wanna dump my thoughts into someone I don't know well's mentions

@00dani @jacethechicken because 5e is fun and not a pain in the ass

re: sorta subtoot but mainly just cuz I didn't wanna dump my thoughts into someone I don't know well's mentions

@monorail @jacethechicken but it's........ not, tho?

it's just a worse 3e in practically every respect

re: sorta subtoot but mainly just cuz I didn't wanna dump my thoughts into someone I don't know well's mentions

@00dani @jacethechicken okay well don't ask the question if you're not going to like the answer :p

re: sorta subtoot but mainly just cuz I didn't wanna dump my thoughts into someone I don't know well's mentions

@monorail @jacethechicken i don't understand the answer! 5e is less fun and my ass has more pain from it than 3e! :blobcatsurprised:

re: sorta subtoot but mainly just cuz I didn't wanna dump my thoughts into someone I don't know well's mentions

@00dani @jacethechicken okay, well, i have more fun playing 5e and it's less of a pain in my ass ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

re: sorta subtoot but mainly just cuz I didn't wanna dump my thoughts into someone I don't know well's mentions

@monorail @00dani
yeah 5e is easier for me than 3e, but tbh that's mostly just because feats are optional in 5e so you don't have to look through a table with like five hundred entries every time you make a character

re: sorta subtoot but mainly just cuz I didn't wanna dump my thoughts into someone I don't know well's mentions

@aradinfinity @monorail i think part of that is just that wotc have printed so little content for 5e at all

there's been like, a half dozen supplements in the several years it's been out? nowhere near the volume of splatbooks 3e got in its heyday, which naturally means much shorter lists of shit to pick from

also you're forced to give up an ability score increase to get a feat now, and you need ability score increases because bounded accuracy, so feats are kind of a trap option anyway,

re: sorta subtoot but mainly just cuz I didn't wanna dump my thoughts into someone I don't know well's mentions

@00dani @monorail as someone who likes pathfinder / 3.5e well enough: it is nothing like 5e

re: sorta subtoot but mainly just cuz I didn't wanna dump my thoughts into someone I don't know well's mentions

@00dani I've run lots of pathfinder (strictly-better than 3e or 3.5e, imo); it is much harder to teach and to run

re: 3e

@00dani in my experience: pathfinder is much more Robust than 5e. it has rules for everything you might do. for some people this is a positive; for others, it's a pain. everything you don't know off the top of your head as a DM requires a look into the SRD -- cuz you know it's spelled out *somewhere!* -- wheras 5e has much better systems in place for Just Winging It.

like I said -- I *like* pathfinder! but sometimes it's just Too Much Ruleset, especially with players who aren't familiar.

re: 3e

@jacethechicken i mean i think that's exactly what makes 3e better than 5e, it actually has rules

5e is just kinda. exactly the same ruleset but they forgot to print three quarters of it?

there's a very small chunk of vaguely decent improvements (skills being untrained/trained/supertrained instead of having discrete skill ranks is so much cleaner, backgrounds are good) and then so much that's just. wotc refusing to actually write a rule for anything, even though 3e had a rule for it that (mostly) worked

also bounded accuracy is so goddamn bad. if you want a game that doesn't scale in power the way d&d does? use dicepools or something. god.

re: 3e

@00dani have you DMed 3e / pathfinder for people who have never played it before? I have. I have also DMed 5e for people who have never played it. one of those was much much easier than the other.

I don't always want everything to be spelled out. "Here's some tips on how to make stuff up" is what I *want* my general-purpose ruleset to do! this isn't a wargame; I'm here for storytelling and drama, not rules or tables. I never want to have to stop the game to look up how to do something.

re: 3e

@jacethechicken hmm

i get where you're coming from, and honestly i've never actually gm'd either game? so maybe it's a different experience from that perspective

as a player though, pretty much every session of 5e i play i'm newly baffled that it doesn't support some really basic shit that i know 3e had a solid rule for :blobcatgooglyshrug:

sorta subtoot but mainly just cuz I didn't wanna dump my thoughts into someone I don't know well's mentions

@jacethechicken ive wanted to try call of cthulhu for ages damn

sorta subtoot but mainly just cuz I didn't wanna dump my thoughts into someone I don't know well's mentions

@jacethechicken i like d&d because i like all the different shapes, i like that there is an interaction with numbers that i enjoy, i like finding ways to misuse the rules, i like coming up with ridiculously detailed fluff that is not at all true to the spirit or intention of spells but still fulfils the material functions, i hate that there is a rick and morty pack so so so so much, i like

sorta subtoot but mainly just cuz I didn't wanna dump my thoughts into someone I don't know well's mentions

@jacethechicken same though in my circles it's Pathfinder everyone knows

god I remember when some people were on about how Fate was like the savior of gaming circles. you don't have to like DnD/PF, even people who like it find flaws, but it's obnoxious to pretend they only exist because people aren't smart enough to find other systems
